On this day in 1997, nearly 5 million bits of #Lego, much of it sea themed, fell into the ocean when a huge wave hit the cargo ship Tokio Express, washing 62 containers overboard. Among the pieces lost were tiny minifig heads, their faces now mostly blank after decades at sea. pic.twitter.com/ex0ajN6vSl

A matching pair! Lego flippers from the spill of 1997, freshly washed out of the sand. Found just a few metres apart on the same day. pic.twitter.com/h10HgESDHT

写真は@LegoLostAtSeaより pic.twitter.com/gAzxvnLImR

Hair slides/accessories found on Cornish beaches. Many are thought to be ‘vintage’ Goody barrettes from the 80s, though you can still buy them today.#plasticheritage #plasticarchaeology #oceanplastic pic.twitter.com/LUknaVJWAk

Here’s something else we find on beaches almost every day – blue bungs, thought to be from ale casks. We’ve picked up over 10,000, maybe over 20,000; we stopped counting along ago. pic.twitter.com/sKmmcAzSyH

In 2011, millions of tiny plastic disks were accidentally released into the Merrimack River from the Hooksett wastewater plant in New Hampshire, USA. They’re still turning up. We found this one today in Cornwall, UK, some 3000 miles away. #oceanplastic #marinedebris pic.twitter.com/jqecH7Uur3

13th Feb 1997 #TokioExpress was hit by a rogue wave & lost 62 containers overboard. One was full of 4.8 million Lego pieces. Our volunteers still pick them up today @laurencereed @CleanCornwall @sascampaigns @LegoLostAtSea @Seasaver pic.twitter.com/7XAH7RGSyJ
